11 Phrases You Seriously Need To Stop Saying To Your Single Friends

11 Phrases You Seriously Need To Stop Saying To Your Single Friends

Without further ado and without any special introduction, I’m going to jump right on the phrases that every single person is sick and tired of hearing.

I think we all know what they are, but let’s put them all in one place to have those “words of wisdom” permanently written somewhere.

1. “Ah, I know. Living a single life can be such a struggle.”

What?! When people choose pity as an emotion to walk up to someone single they know, it makes me sick to the pit of my stomach.

Single people aren’t sick, there’s nothing wrong with them, so why do people treat them completely opposite to the way they should.

Hasn’t it ever occurred to anyone that maybe some single people choose to be single?

Maybe some people aren’t ready to be in a relationship because the last one was a disaster? Perhaps they need some time to heal.

But someone “smart” knows nothing about that, yet they meddle where they aren’t supposed to.

2. “Don’t worry, you’ll find someone.”

Who says they’re worrying? Maybe they weren’t even thinking about it until someone who felt entitled to point that out came into the picture.

On the other hand, how does anyone even know if the single person they’re talking to will find someone?

What are we, living among fortune-tellers? Do they know to predict the future? Do they actually know what’s going to happen?

No… The only thing you’re getting is another form of pity consolation.

3. “Are you still single?”

First of all, why would anyone be interested in this information unless they’re into you? If they aren’t, they’re just nosy.

Second of all, okay, it’s not the question itself that bothers me, it’s the “still”’ part.

People don’t realize how judgy they sound when they use the word still in this construction.

They don’t get that talking to someone in this way is pretty offensive. It’s either that, which is forgivable, or it’s something else. Like for example, they’re talking to you in this way on purpose.

4. “Have you ever tried dating apps?”

Dating apps aren’t for everyone. What if someone is an introvert?

Naturally, it’s so much easier for those people to communicate with another human being without any social pressure, therefore it’s understandable that online communication is the way to go.

But what happens when that same introvert starts communicating with an extrovert via dating app?

For as long as communication is virtual, everything is fine. The moment the communication becomes real, eye to eye, you have a problem.

That starting point was not natural.

5. “You should totally date my friend!”

Why do people adore playing Love God? There is no point in mentioning blind dates or your friends.

I’m sure if the friend who “needs” your romantic expertise wanted your help, they’d have already asked for it.

I speak from experience when I say that the last thing you need in your life is another strange encounter with someone you’ve been set up to go out with, but I’m pretty sure you know the feeling too.

6. “I’m so jealous that you’re single.”

Hm…. No, they’re not. If they were jealous, the problem would be so easy to fix. They’d break up then they’d be single too.

People who say this only say it so they have something to say.

Some are even trying to make you feel better, but actually, they aren’t doing that great of a job. They’re only making it worse.

7. “Oh, you’re single, I’m so sorry!”

I mean, c’mon! Can anyone be more snobbish and rude than that! Why would you or I need anyone to be sorry for us?

Are we sick? Are we deformed in some way? Oh, right, we’re single, that’s why we need empathy. Well, that’s just ridiculous.

8. “You need to put yourself out there.”

Forcing a single person to go out more is like forcing an introvert to talk to people more. It doesn’t make any sense.

We’ll do it on our terms and when we want to. No one has the right to force us to do anything, especially someone who’s in a relationship and feels entitled to “help” a friend.

The best help anyone can offer you is to be your support – to be something totally unlike forceful.

9. “Use this time to improve yourself.”

Does that mean when you’re in a relationship, you don’t have the time to work on yourself and make yourself better?

Well, that’s just funny and sad at the same time. I mean, it’s sad to even think that there are people who actually believe this statement is true.

We always work on ourselves, no matter if we’re single or not, so one of the things a single person simply detests hearing is this.

10. “Your standards are too high!”

Well, they might as well spat me in the face. What’s this? Another way of saying, “You’re ugly and you’re fat.

Get real and work within your league!” I get that not everyone is for everyone, but if a person has standards they want to fulfill, how can anyone argue with that?

No one has that right. Maybe I’m single because I don’t want to lower my standards, because I know what I deserve.

I’m not willing to risk my happiness by dropping my standards.

11. “You’ll find someone when you least expect it!”

I can’t stress this enough! Once again, everyone has a different experience. We can talk from our personal experience, but that doesn’t have to be a universal truth.

Usually, people talk about something that happened to them like it’s the absolute truth and it can’t be anything different.

Well, no one can tell me or you that love awaits around the corner and it’ll come when you least expect it. No one knows – that’s the beauty of it!
